While we’re staying at home to help stop the Coronavirus from spreading, we have to remember to continue to pay attention to our bodies. And this includes parts of it we may not think twice about such as our feet! Dr. Mark Thompson and Dr. Brandon Holloway of Amarillo Foot Specialists located in the Amarillo, TX panhandle have been contacted by several patients since the shelter-at-home order was initiated, and many of them were voicing concerns about their feet ranging from arch and heel pain to injuries from walking around the house while barefoot.

When we’re in our homes, we usually just wear slippers, socks, or nothing at all. But now that people are in their homes for extended periods, they could be walking a mile or more a day while inside the house.

And without proper foot support, they are going to begin experiencing discomfort or pain, not only in the feet but in their shoulders, back, hips, knees, and even their neck.

Whether you’re out and about or you’re staying at home, keep in mind that good foot health is crucial to overall body health, so be sure to give your feet some support!  If you follow our five foot-health tips, your feet and entire body will stay healthy!

1. Get walking.  Even if you’re just out in the yard or inside the house, walking - while wearing proper footwear - is an important way to help prevent injuries and keep fit. Try to walk at least 30 minutes each day for the most health benefits.

2. Drink enough water. Many of us don’t drink a healthy amount of water. Hydration helps keep feet healthy, preventing things like arthritis pain, and gout. Try to drink at least two liters or a half-gallon of water each day.

3. Practice good hygiene. Day-to-day foot care is important to guard against ingrown nails and other issues. Be sure to wash your feet each day with a mild soap daily, dry them well, and trim your toenails at least once every two weeks.

4. Limit junk food and foods high in sugar. This is particularly important for diabetics because foods that are high in sugar and fat, can make nerve conditions in the feet worse and lead to complications like infections. Keep healthy snacks on hand such as nuts and/or vegetables, which contain protein.

5. Stretch and exercise your feet. By keeping your feet strong you can improve flexibility and alleviate soreness. It’s good to stretch the feet 2-3 times a day using range-of-motion exercises.
