Exercise and fresh air are more important than ever, and the last thing we want is for a foot or ankle problem to send you back indoors. Don’t walk around in flip-flops or barefoot all day. Walking barefoot can be a problem, especially if you’re walking around in shared or public spaces. These surfaces can conceal micro-organisms that can spread. These conditions include fungal nails, warts, or athlete’s foot.
Make sure you wear proper footwear. If your shoes or sandals don’t fit properly, don’t deal well with moisture, or aren’t providing the support they need, they might be doing more harm than good.
Don’t try to bounce back too quickly. After being inside during the spring, it’s no surprise that you might want to throw yourself into activity and exercise as quickly as you can. When beginning new exercise routines or activities, it’s important to go slow at first.
Mix it up a little. A good way to make sure you don’t over-strain any one part of your body or muscle group is to cross-train. You can help avoid this by canceling a few days of high-impact exercise from your weekly schedule and doing different kinds of exercises instead.
Protect your feet from the sun’s rays. If you choose comfortable, supportive sandals for your outdoor activities, be sure you protect your exposed skin from the sun. The tops of your feet are just as vulnerable to sunburn as any other part of your body.
